Lisa Friend - Flute

Lisa Friend started the flute aged five. At sixteen she studied in New York with flautist Renee Siebert of the New York Philharmonic. She was then awarded a flute Scholarship to study with Julius Baker at his summer school in Connecticut.

At seventeen, Lisa won a Scholarship to the Royal College of Music. where she studied with Susan Milan. Twice winner of the Martin Music Scholarship then enabled her to study at the Paris Conservatoire with Alain Marion and Ida Ribera.

As a soloist, Lisa has appeared with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Prague Philharmonic, Liverpool Philharmonic and toured throughout the UK, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, China and the USA. Other solo appearances include BBC ChildLine, a concert for Royal Family at Buckingham Palace as soloist with the late Yehudi Menuhin, the Britten theatre with the late Sir George Solti and for Steven Spielberg after writing and performing a track for his foundation SHOAH. Lisa was also soloist for the Bill Kenwright production Music 2000. She has given live recitals for Classic FM and Radio 3. Live television has included Brandenburg 5th Concerto in Spain with her father the International violinist Rodney Friend.

After signing a deal with Universal Publishing, Lisa wrote original arrangements for her trio based on some of the great film scores as well as her own compositions, performing at venues such as St Martin-in-the-Fields, St. James's Piccadilly, St. John's Smith Square and the British Embassy in Paris. Lisa recorded as soloist, Ennio Morricone's 'Once upon a time in America' for Silver Screen Records with the Prague Philharmonic.

Lisa recently performed alongside Liza Minnelli in aid of the White Rose Ball Holocaust Trust Fundraiser.  She also featured on a CD recording for 'Malcolm Martineau and friends' of songs by Poulenc on the Signum Classics label.  Lisa is currently in the middle of recording her second solo album.

Recent highlights include recitals at St James's Piccadilly, The Forge and for the House of Commons amongst others.


Lisa Friend was made an Ambassador of the Princes Trust in 2012 and is delighted to be working alongside and supporting such a worthy cause.

Anna Stokes - Flute

Anna Stokes is an established orchestral and chamber musician. She has worked with numerous orchestras including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, London Concert Orchestra, Northern Sinfonia, Brandenburg Sinfonia, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Arts Symphonic and Bath Philharmonia. She has also toured the UK extensively with singers Russell Watson and Aled Jones.

She founded the Emanuel Ensemble in 2001 and they have since gone on to perform in recitals at the Purcell Room, Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall, National Gallery, V & A Museum, Conway Hall, Leeds International Festival, Schubert Society of Britain, Villa D'este Lake Como and numerous UK Concert Societies. Anna recently recorded her debut CD with the Emanuel Ensemble (John Reid-Pianist and Louisa Tuck-Cello) which was released in July 2011.

As a soloist, Anna has given flute/piano duo performances for the Qatar Foundation in Doha, at the Beethovenhaus in Bonn, the Cheltenham International Festival, for UK concert societies and performed concertos and solo works by Bach, Chaminade, Mozart, Quantz, Reinecke and Rouse. In 2006-2008 she was selected to participate in the Sir James Galway International Masterclass series and in 2007 was awarded a gold Nagahara headjoint for Best Performer by popular vote. Anna has worked with and featured on CD releases with artists including Aled Jones, Isabel-The Choirgirl, Camilla Kerslake and Beverley Knight.

Awards include the Marc Rich Scholarship for Artistic Achievement, Haynes International Flute Competition Prize Winner (2007), LPO Future Firsts (2006-7), Solti Foundation Award, Brannen-Cooper Flute awarded to her from the Foundation for Sport and the Arts and the EMI Sound Foundation. Anna has also given workshops in the UK, Hong Kong and Qatar and assisted in the Lisa Friend London Flute Summer Class 2010 / 11/ 12.
 
Anna began studying the flute with Athanasios Kalimeris. She was then awarded a scholarship to the Purcell School of Music where she studied with Anna Pope for five years and is a former Principal Flute of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.  She was consequently awarded a Foundation Scholarship to the Royal College of Music where she  studied flute with Susan Milan and Stewart McLlwham, graduating in 2004 with First Class Honours. She later received private tuition from Celia Chambers. She has also received coaching from an array of flautists including Sir james Galway, Paul Edmund Davies, Susan Thomas, Kenneth Smith, the late Sebastian Bell and composers Edwin Roxburgh, and the late Nicholas Maw and Jindrich Feld.

Anna plays on a Powell flute which was made possible with support of the David Bowerman Charitable Trust.

Katherine Bryan - Flute

Katherine Bryan made her concerto debut at the age of just 15 with Daniel Harding and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London and later made her US concerto debut at the Lincoln Centre with the Julliard Orchestra. She has since performed as soloist with the Helsinki Philharmonic, Royal Scottish National, Halle, Nurnberger Symphoniker, New York Philharmonic and English Baroque orchestras.

Katherine's debut solo recording of the Nielsen and Liebermann Concertos, Poulenc Sonata (orch Berkeley) and Hue Fantasie was released in September 2010, recorded with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Paul Daniel. The recording has received rave reviews.

A winner of the prestigious Audi Music Competition at the age of 15, Ms. Bryan initially studied at Chetham School of Music, Manchester and won a full scholarship to study flute at the Julliard School of Music, New York with Jeanne Baxtresser and Carol Wincenc where she won the four-yearly flute concerto competition. She was also a prize winner at the Royal Overseas League Music Competition in London, the Young Concert Artists International Competition in New York and was a finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year for three consecutive competitions. She was awarded the Julius Isserlis Scholarship by the Royal Philharmonic Society.

Ms Bryan spent the summers of 2001 and 2002 in Japan with the Pacific Music Festival Orchestra working with conductors including Charles Dutoit.

At the age of just 21, Ms Bryan was appointed principal flute with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra - a position she holds today in addition to appearing as concerto soloist with leading orchestras worldwide. She is currently a lecturer in flute at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and has played as Guest Principal with the London Philharmonic, BBC Scottish, Scottish Chamber, Royal Philharmonic, Northern Sinfonia, Halle, Philharmonia and London Symphony orchestras.

Ms Bryan has appeared at major international festivals as both concerto soloist and recitalist, including the Cheltenham International Festival. She has given live broadcasts on Classic FM, BBC Radio 3 and on BBC television, and, like her recording, her most recent performance of the Nielsen concerto with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra received rave reviews.

Anna Pope - Flute

Anna Pope studied with Maija Lielausis at the Junior Academy and later with William Bennett, after graduating from Oxford with a First in Russian. She has given recitals in the  Purcell Room and for music societies and festivals in this country, Italy, Germany and in Sweden where she made a series of broadcasts on Swedish Radio. She has free-lanced with various orchestras and chamber groups, and her ensemble 'Pipe Dreams' has recorded music for two flutes and piano.

She has been a professor of flute for over 20 years at the Junior Academy (she was awarded an honorary ARAM in 2000) and has taught at the Purcell School for nearly as long. She has recently joined the professorial staff at Trinity Conservatoire of Music. Teaching is the focus of her interest and her pupils have enjoyed notable success. They have been an almost continuous presence in the NYO since 1993, including three as principal flute. Emma Halnan in 2010 was the second of her students to be a Concerto Finalist in the BBC Young Musician competition.

Judith Kleinman - Alexander Technique

Judith Kleinman trained as a classical musician and teacher at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She has a busy professional career as a double bass player. She was a member of the orchestra of the English National Opera and City of London Sinfonia and now freelances in London on modern and period instruments. She qualified as an Alexander Technique teacher 20 years ago, having trained with Patrick MacDonald and Shoshana Kamanitz.

Judith is co-director of the London Centre for Alexander Technique, which trains new Alexander teachers. She also has a private practice and has collaborated with systemic psychotherapists on research, combining Alexander work with therapy.

She writes about the technique, particularly about teaching young people, and has presented workshops to the general public and the Alexander world on her approach to the work.

Niall O'Riordan - Flute - Performance Coaching & the Feldenkrais Method

Niall O’Riordan was awarded his MA and BMus from Cork School of Music, Ireland. During his early years and BMus Degree, he studied flute with Evelyn Grant. During this time he received consecutive scholarships there. He also received coaching from French flautist and pianist, Sabine Ducrot during his MA. A highlight in his training was studying with Sir James Galway at his 2011 & ‘12 classes in Switzerland. Other significant mentors include Prof Robert Winn and Dr Anders-Ljungar Chapelon.

Niall enjoys a varied career performing, teaching, and writing.  He is an experienced and passionate teacher and has tutored chamber music and flute at University College Cork, taught flute at Cork School of Music and privately for many years. Since 2004 Niall has completed three intensive part-time courses in flute pedagogy and holds the qualifications from Lund University, Sweden. Last August he presented workshops at the Sir James Galway International Flute Festival Switzerland. Recent masterclass engagements include the Cork School of Music in 2012 as well as giving workshops at William Bennett’s Summer School in 2011.

Niall was a visiting lecturer at Lund University Sweden in 2009 and he assisted at the Oxford International Flute Summer School from 2006-10. As a writer his articles are regularly published in the British Flute Society Journal ‘Pan’.

His acclaimed teaching style receives international attention. He adopts a completely holistic approach to flute playing which draws inspiration from yoga, psychology, voice work, NLP, and visualisation. The foundation of his approach is rooted in the Feldenkrais method, which he is currently training as a certified practitioner. He leads insightful and inspiring workshops across Europe and the UK has given workshops at the last three British Flute Society International conventions.

Wai-Yin Lee - Resident Course Pianist

Wai-Yin Lee was born in Hong Kong, and obtained her Degree in Piano from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA). In 2000, she was awarded a two-year full scholarship from the Royal College of Music in London to study Piano Performance. After completing her Masters Degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, she then pursued her studies as a repetiteur  on City Educational Scholarship. The following year, she was awarded a fellowship at the GSMD. The same year she was also invited to join National Opera Studio as a part-time repetiteur trainee. 

Wai-Yin is currently working at the Royal College of Music as a repetiteur and as a coach for the Opera School, also as one of the official accompanists for the entrance exams.

She has also worked for the Opera Holland Park, Grange Park Opera Company, English Touring Opera, Co-opera, Birmingham Opera Company, Longborough Festival Opera, European Opera Centre, Castleward Opera Company, English Pocket Opera, Pegasus Opera Company, Southgate Opera, British Youth Opera, European Chamber Opera and the National Opera Studio.
